One Love,
One Coast

For generations, Coastside farmworkers have cultivated deep roots in Half Moon Bay. But as they age, many face a quiet crisis: rising costs, isolation, and a severe lack of housing designed for their needs.
In January 2023, seven farmworkers were killed at two Half Moon Bay mushroom farms. In the days after, officials walked the sites where they had lived. Twenty-seven workers and their families were housed in converted trailers. Neither farm held a permit to house anyone, and the county found no inspection records for either.

On this coast, farmworkers keep working into their seventies and eighties, because wages and the cost of living leave them no way to stop. There is no retirement in the fields — only working until you can't anymore, and to hope somoene has room for you.

For many farmworkers, a trip to the doctor, the pharmacy, or the county office simply isn't possible. So for fifteen years, ALAS has brought that help to them.
